The History and Tradition of Maki-e

Maki-e is said to have existed since the Nara period, and its history is extensive. In its early days, Maki-e was mainly applied to everyday items and furniture. During the Muromachi period, luxurious Maki-e spread as gifts and artistic items in the imperial court. In the Edo period, it became widely appreciated in the commoner's culture, developing its own unique style. Today's Maki-e continues to inherit these rich history and traditions.

The impact of Maki-e on Japanese culture and art is immeasurable. Its intricate technique and beautiful designs have always garnered attention in the Japanese art scene. Additionally, it has contributed to the overseas spread of Japanese culture, showcasing Japan's beauty to the world through Maki-e.

When these elements come together, Maki-e fountain pens become works of art transcending mere writing instruments. Next, let's delve into the manufacturing process and design of Pilot's Maki-e fountain pens, which we also handle at our company.

Since Taisho 15 (1926), Pilot Corporation has been introducing luxury fountain pens adorned with Maki-e, one of Japan's traditional crafts, to Europe and the United States. Seeking further development, they formed the Maki-e artisan group "Kokkokaikai" led by Maki-e master Goro Matsuda, who later became a Living National Treasure. For nearly a century, they have preserved the traditional Maki-e techniques in Japan. The "Maki-e Workshop NAMIKI" is located in the historic remnants of the former Second Navy Ammunition Factory in Hiratsuka, where a brick building from the Taisho era has been renovated to exhibit around 100 Maki-e fountain pens and lacquer art pieces.

The Art and Design of Maki-e

Japan's traditional Maki-e technique is known for its artistic design and delicate craftsmanship. In fountain pens, these elements are especially prominent. Maki-e art is created by applying patterns and motifs to the body of the fountain pen using lacquer.

Maki-e designs are highly diverse, often featuring natural landscapes, animals, and traditional patterns. Expressions of cherry blossoms petals dancing in the wind or intricate details resembling phoenix feathers showcase the seamless fusion of artisanal skill and artistic sensibility.
